Just what is the meaning of life? Why are we here? Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ came with a message, the good news of the Kingdom of God. This message, when properly understood, reveals the purpose of life.
The destiny of every man, woman and child is to become the literal children of God, divine members of His immortal spirit family.
That’s our purpose here on this planet. That’s why you and I are here—why we were born!
We did not evolve from apes or lower life forms. We were planned, fashioned, and intricately designed by an all-intelligent, all-powerful, and an all-loving Creator God.
Our mortal life of about 70+ years is but a preparation for everlasting life in the Kingdom of God.
Here are 12 amazing truths about the meaning of life. They reveal the real purpose of your life.
1. God is reproducing Himself through humans—He is creating a family
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
I said, “You are gods, And all of you are children of the Most High…”
Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’?
I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the Lord Almighty.
~2 Corinthians 6:18
For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one [one family], for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying: “I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.” And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And again: “Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”
For in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.
2. We humans were patterned after God, not animals
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
3. We do not have immortal souls—we are mortal souls
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
This word “being” is translated “soul” in the King James Bible, from the Hebrew word nephesh, which does not denote any spiritual component.
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”
Behold, all souls are Mine;
The soul of the father
As well as the soul of the son is Mine;
The soul who sins shall die.
The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
4. Only God has immortality—He is spirit, while we are flesh and blood
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
[God] alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see…
~1 Timothy 6:16
[God will give] eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality…
5. We are destined to be like Christ in character and glory
For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.
[God’s ministers are to equip and edify the Church] till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…
My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you…
And as we have borne the image of the man of dust [Adam], we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man [Jesus Christ].
~1 Corinthians 15:49
As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
~2 Corinthians 3:18
Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
~1 John 3:2
6. As God’s workmanship, our character is being perfected through trials
You shall call, and I will answer You;
You shall desire the work of Your hands.
But now, O Lord,
You are our Father;
We are the clay, and You our potter;
And all we are the work of Your hand.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
7. Our mortal bodies will one day be transformed to spirit
So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
~1 Corinthians 15:42-44
If a man dies, shall he live again?
All the days of my hard service I will wait,
Till my change comes.
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
~1 Corinthians 15:50-53
8. We will be divine, immortal and full of glory
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
…to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
…as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature…
~2 Peter 1:3-4
And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake,
Some to everlasting life,
Some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Those who are wise shall shine
Like the brightness of the firmament,
And those who turn many to righteousness
Like the stars forever and ever.
The righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
[The glorified Christ’s] head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.
9. We will be holy, righteous, and perfect
Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
~1 John 3:9
10. If we are faithful, Christ will make others worship before us
Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these things. Then he said to me, “See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”
And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”
Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie — indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.
11. We will rule the world, and even judge angels
Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?
~1 Corinthians 6:2-3
12. We will inherit “all things”—this vast and awesome universe
He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
For You have made him [for] a little [while] lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.
You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet…
“…You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him.
And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the Lord your God has given to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage [an inheritance].
This is just the beginning. The future is brighter and more exciting…
You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
But as it is written:
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
~1 Corinthians 2:9
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.
The Spirit [itself] bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
The real meaning of life is revealed, not discovered. We cannot know the meaning of life apart from God, the Creator of life. Human beings have long been confused about the meaning of life, because they have rejected God’s revelation — the Bible.
While we can certainly find meaning in our individual lives, we cannot discover the meaning of life just by thinking, contemplating, or reflecting about it. The Bible reveals that the meaning of life — the purpose of life — is to enter, inherit, or be born into the Kingdom of God — the divine Family of God.
Human beings are unique among all creatures on this planet. While animals were created after their own kind, only humans were created after God’s kind — after His image and likeness. Therefore, we were created to have a relationship with God.
God is reproducing Himself through humans. He is divine, immortal Spirit. His character can be summed up in one word: LOVE — outflowing concern for others. He is the epitome of perfection — the ultimate example of holy, righteous character.
The meaning of life is to become like God our Father and Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, in every possible way — having the same divine, immortal SPIRIT composition, as well as the same holy, righteous, and perfect character of LOVE!
